Cruella: My Review on the Trailer

By Kolawole Steven

Cruella is an live action adaptation of the 1961 classic film, 101 Dalmatians. Cruella follows the life of the titular character as a younger woman who wants the world to recognize her and also wants to make trouble while doing that. It depicts how Cruella De Vil  became the sinister psychopathy introduced in the animated movie.

Synopsis:

“Cruella,” which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable, and revenge-bent Cruella.

The visuals of the movie is very stunning and we'll grounded. There is a tension between the two antagonists of the movie; Baroness and Estella (Cruella). Baroness is Cruella's Mentor who torments her into thinking that she has to be Vicious and have a "Killer Instinct" to be able to be appreciated by the world which promts her to become Cruella. Estella shows signs of mental illness even before the trailer progressed and revealing herself as Cruella.

One thing that I expected was Cruella following the footsteps of the original and being a fleshed out villain without having a tragic backstory making her an anti hero like Maleficent (2014). She is portrayed as a villain which we all root for and somehow wish for her to be good at the same time. Emma Stone portrays the character to perfection. Only a few actors can portray animated characters to perfection and she is one of them.

As stated previously, Emma Stone portray Cruella. Emma Thompson would portray Cruella's mentor, Baroness. Other actors include Emily Beecham; Dev Patel; Paul Walter Hauser; Mark Strong; Kirby Howell-Basptise.

The movie would be honoring the late Cameron Boyce who tragically passed away on the 07th of July, 2019. He died of epileptic related diseases. He previously played Cruella's son; Carlos on the descendants franchise. The release date of the movie would be on Camerons birthday.

Cruella would be in theatres on the 28th of May 2021 and would also be streaming Exclusively on Disney +
